ios lock screen widget

The lock screen widget keeps showing "nothing planned" although there are definitely items on the calendar. The same thing happens on the widget once the phone is unlocked. On the main widget however it stays blank for a moment but then loads eventually. However it repeatedly resets to showing no events.
